Deputy governorship candidate resigns 45 days to election

Date:

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State is encountering a significant obstacle prior to the upcoming off-cycle gubernatorial election due to the resignation of Mrs. Susan Gbemisola Alabi, their Deputy Governorship candidate.

This unforeseen turn of events has occurred a mere 45 days before the pivotal election, forcing the SDP to urgently seek a substitute.

In her resignation letter dated October 2, 2024, and directed to the SDP’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, Mrs. Alabi explained that she chose to step down to explore fresh opportunities.

Her resignation was effective immediately, and she officially informed both the party leadership and the SDP’s Governorship candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), about her choice.

She wrote, “This decision was not made lightly, as I have valued my time with the party. However, after careful consideration, I believe it is in my best interest to pursue new opportunities and directions.”

She also mentioned that she had told Otunba Bamidele Akingboye that she was stepping down as the Deputy Governorship candidate for the upcoming election.

Alabi added, “Please also note that I have given notice of my resignation as the SDP Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2024 Governorship election to Otunba Bamidele Akingboye.”

In separate letter to the SDP Governorship candidate, Mrs. Alabi explained that although there were talks about her resigning for health reasons, she affirmed that she was not unwell. Instead, she decided to step down to support the party’s electoral plans.

“For the record, please note that I’m not sick and can perform optimally.

“However, for the sake of your ambition and you concluding to replace me with someone else from the Central of Ondo State as you believe it will better your chances of winning, I hereby formally resign my position with you as your Deputy,” Alabi wrote.

Alabi thanked Akingboye for giving her the chance to run alongside him and wished him well in the forthcoming election.

She concluded, “Thank you for choosing me to be your running mate. I wish you success in the coming elections.”
