Details of meeting unfolds between Former President Obasanjo, Reps members in Ogun

Date:

Details have it that there is a meeting at former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s house in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He met with six members of the House of Representatives, led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere.

Obasanjo advised the government to pay attention to the issues raised by Nigerian youths during their protests for improved governance, economic prospects, and an end to corruption.

He warned that ignoring the demands of the youth could have serious outcomes due to their frustration, desperation, anger, and high rates of unemployment.

“You are what you are today because you’re a Nigerian; I’m what I am also because I’m a Nigerian. So why should they be Nigerians and be languishing in poverty?

“They make demands and we’re not listening to them. Many of them are frustrated, desperate, angry and unemployed. What do we expect?,” he asked.

Obasanjo highlighted the importance of a shift in mindset among leaders, emphasizing that Nigeria’s advancement hinges on meeting the needs of the youth.

During the Friday meeting, they also talked about a proposal for a single six-year term for the president and a rotation system between the North and South regions of the country.

Obasanjo further noted, “For me, the issue is for us to get it right. Whether we have one term of six years or two terms of four years; where it’ll work is our mentality.

“We have to decarbonise our brain. If you give a person one single term of six years, he will do the same harm he could have done in two terms of four years.

“If you have a system you can trust; you have an INEC you can trust, then it will not matter the number of years.”

During a meeting at former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mr. Ugochinyere and a group of lawmakers discussed the necessity of a single six-year presidential term and proposed a rotational governance system between the North and South regions of Nigeria.

They emphasized the importance of addressing the demands of Nigerian youths for better governance and highlighted the need for a change in leadership mentality to drive the country’s progress.
