The Edo State House of Assembly has lodged an appeal against the ruling made by Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court had invalidated the impeachment of the former deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu.
Additionally, the Assembly has requested a stay of execution on the judgment while the appeal is pending. Justice Omotosho recently declared the impeachment of Philip Shaibu, the former deputy governor of Edo State, as invalid.
The judge ruled that the state House of Assembly did not follow proper procedures in removing Shaibu from office. As a result, the court ordered Shaibu to be reinstated and revoked the appointment of the deputy governor who had replaced him.
In April, the Edo State House of Assembly impeached Philip Shaibu, bringing an end to a prolonged conflict between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki. The impeachment of Shaibu came after a seven-member committee, appointed by Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa of Edo State, conducted an investigation into allegations of misconduct against the deputy governor.
During the session, 18 out of the 19 members present at the plenary voted in favor of Shaibu’s impeachment, while one member abstained from the head count and voting procedures.
