The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted rumors suggesting that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is currently in its custody.
The anti-corruption agency has stated that the former governor is evading arrest and is being sought after for suspected financial wrongdoing.
In a statement released on Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale provided clarification on the matter.
Oyewale stated, “Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello, is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect.”
The commission also reiterated that Bello is subject to an arrest warrant concerning allegations of money laundering totaling ₦80.2 billion.
The statement read, “Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged ₦80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”
The clarification arises amidst extensive speculation regarding the former governor’s location and legal standing.
The statement from the EFCC conclusively dispels rumors of his confinement while emphasizing the gravity of the accusations leveled against him.
