Electricity: Metered consumers decline 0.21% to 5.9m

In May 2024, the total number of metered customers experienced a slight decline of 0.21 percent month-on-month, decreasing to 5.977 million from 5.990 million in April

Similarly, the total number of registered electricity customers saw a reduction of 1.81 percent month-on-month, dropping to 13.1 million in May 2024 from 13.4 million in April 2024. This information comes from the latest report by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), titled “Metering and Customer Service Standards.”

The report highlights that the total number of customers metered by the eleven electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) fell by 63.2 percent, from 23,724 in April to 8,733 in May 2024.

The breakdown of DISCOs with the highest number of metered customers for May 2024 shows that Ikeja Electric, Aba Power, Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Yola, and Enugu were at the top with 2,576, 1,398, 1,189, 964, and 788 metered customers, respectively.

Conversely, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Kano, Eko, Benin, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Ibadan had the lowest number of metered customers, with 22, 144, 171, 237, 288, 390, and 566, respectively, according to NERC data.

Additionally, the total number of complaints received by DISCOs increased by 8.5 percent, rising to 106,285 in May 2024 from 97,959 in April 2024.
