Even military never raided our offices – NLC expresses strong disapproval over security invasion

Date:

The Nigeria Labour Congress has denounced the invasion of its headquarters in Abuja by security personnel on Wednesday, August 7.

In a statement released by Benson Upah, the Head of Media and Public Relations, the NLC reported that heavily armed individuals entered the Labour House around 8:30 pm, well after working hours had ended.

Upah expressed the NLC’s strong disapproval of what they deem as a troubling development in security operations within Nigeria and asserted that such actions will not be accepted.

He stated, “If this harassment continues, the Nigeria Labour Congress will not hesitate to call on its members to stay home until their safety and security are assured.”

Ujah elaborated that a group of operatives, including individuals from the Nigeria Police Force and others in black tee-shirts, believed to be from the State Security Services (SSS), descended on the 10th Floor of the NLC headquarters.

These operatives apprehended the security officer on duty and escorted him to the second floor, demanding that he provide access to the offices by handing over the keys.

Ujah further added, “When he told them that he had no such keys on him, they broke into the 10th floor and ransacked the bookshop on the 2nd floor carting away hundreds of books and other publications.

“The invading troop claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGoveranance protests.”

Noting that the act by the Police and the SSS is a new low, Ujah said the armed security operatives failed to present any legal document permitting them to invade the premises of the NLC.
