Ex-Benue State Governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam, has confirmed he wants to take over as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ambassador Umar Illyya Damagum.
Suswam believes it is the North Central’s turn, according to the PDP’s rules, to fill the position left by Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. He says the party’s constitution guides how such empty positions are filled.
Concerning the selection process, Suswam explained that the party’s top leaders will choose the next chairman. So instead of holding elections, the selection will involve a collaborative effort among party stakeholders to reach a consensus.
Suswam raised worries about certain members causing harm to the party by posing as leaders. He pointed to the alleged disorderly conduct during state congresses as an instance of misbehavior that contributed to the party’s significant loss in the recent elections.
He said, “Some people want to hoodwink us because they want to control the entire party structures in the state.
“Their actions led to the comprehensive defeat of the party in the last polls and we must stand firm not to allow them to have their way again.
”What they are enjoying is a short-term victory as you cannot build anything on nothing.
“It is only the ward congress that was genuinely conducted in 15 LGA in the state that will stand.”
