Ex-senate President Wabara: I rejected N250m third term bribe

Date:

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has restated his assertion of rejecting a bribe of N250 million that was offered to him in support of the controversial third-term agenda during the administration of Former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In an excerpt from a YouTube interview series called “Untold Stories with Adesuwa,” which was released on Monday, Wabara confidently affirmed the truthfulness of his claim. Despite the prevailing rumors, he did not believe them and stood firm in his decision to reject the substantial bribe.

The former Senate President clarified an important point regarding his departure from office, emphasizing that he resigned rather than being removed by Former President Obasanjo.

In response to the interviewer’s suggestion that there might have been pressure for his resignation, Wabara refuted it, stating that there was no pressure at all.

Wabara underscored the significance of his refusal to support the third-term agenda, highlighting that individuals like him played a crucial role in safeguarding democracy.

He expressed that if they had endorsed the third-term agenda, it would have led to dictatorship and tyranny, preventing figures like President Buhari and even the present-day Tinubu from emerging. Wabara emphasized the importance of their actions in allowing democracy to thrive.

When pressed for further clarification by the interviewer, he remained steadfast in his position. Wabara also provided context to the political climate of that period, explaining that he was skeptical when he heard rumors of N50 million being distributed to each senator.

Wabara briefly mentioned the broader implications of their actions and the ongoing challenges faced by the Igbo people, although specific details were not disclosed.

He stated, “We have not been forgiven for what we did not cause, the Biafra War. It wasn’t our fault, but the propaganda is that the Igbos cannot be trusted.”
