A severe gas explosion occurred at the residence of Abdulkareem Haruna, a Nigerian journalist working for HumAngle, in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday morning.
The tragic event, triggered by a defective gas cylinder, resulted in multiple injuries, including a newborn baby currently in a coma. The explosion happened while the family was getting ready for the baby’s naming ceremony.
A coworker of Haruna from HumAngle, who chose to remain anonymous, verified the incident, although specific information about the victims’ conditions is not yet clear.
The colleague stated, “We heard about it today. He lives in Maiduguri but I don’t know the present situation of the victims, we only heard they were injured.”
In a sequence of tweets, conflict journalist Zagazola Makama shared additional information, depicting the distressing situation that transpired at Haruna’s residence.
He stated, “In a tragic incident this morning, a sudden gas explosion occurred at the residence of journalist Abdulkareem Haruna, sending shockwaves through the neighbourhood.
“The explosion, which is believed to have been caused by a faulty gas cylinder, tore through the kitchen as family members were preparing for the naming ceremony of the newborn child. Two individuals present at the scene sustained serious injuries.
“In a heartbreaking turn, a newborn baby, just days old, was caught in the blast and slipped into a coma due to the trauma.”
Makama appealed for assistance for Haruna and his family in this challenging period, encouraging the community to pray for the healing of those injured, particularly the newborn baby.
