The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied revoking the licenses of Unity Bank and Keystone Bank.
A circular, allegedly from the CBN, circulated on social media, advising customers to withdraw their money from these banks using ATMs or transfer their funds to another bank before it was too late.
The circular falsely claimed, “CBN has withdrawn the licenses of Heritage Bank, Unity Bank, and Keystone Bank. All affected customers should withdraw all their money using ATM cards or transfer the funds to another bank immediately. Please circulate this information to colleagues, family, and friends to help others.”
However, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the CBN clarified that it did not issue any circular regarding the withdrawal of these banks’ licenses. The CBN stated that the viral circular was fake and intended to mislead the public.
On June 3, the CBN announced the revocation of Heritage Bank’s license due to the bank’s inability to improve its financial performance. Following this, some online reports falsely claimed that the CBN would also revoke the licenses of Unity Bank, Polaris Bank, and Keystone Bank.
On June 4, the CBN refuted these claims, asserting that it had no plans to revoke the licenses of the three banks. On June 10, the CBN reassured the public that the banking system and depositors’ funds were safe.
