Fake victims infiltrating IDP camps – Zulum laments

Date:

After the recent flooding that impacted Maiduguri due to the Alau Dam breakdown, the Internally Displaced Persons Camp established by the Borno state government is witnessing the infiltration of individuals who were not directly affected by the disaster.

During the launch of relief aid distribution to flood victims, Governor Babagana Zulum expressed concern about the increasing presence of non-victims in the IDP camps.

Following the overflow of the Alau Dam, more than 2 million people were reportedly affected, leading to the destruction of numerous homes, farmlands, and properties worth millions.

In response, the state government established IDP camps at Bakassi Camp along Damboa Road in Maiduguri to accommodate those displaced by the flooding.

During his visit, Zulum said, “We have observed that the influx of non-affected individuals into the camps has made the situation unsustainable.

“It is challenging to manage the camps efficiently under these conditions.”

He also guaranteed that the state would assess the affected areas to verify that aid is directed to those genuinely in need of assistance.
