A book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System written by the Nigerian retired lawyer Dele Farotimi, has emerged on Amazon’s bestseller top list in global politics.
The popularity and high demand of the book was a result of the arrest of Farotimi earlier this week on the orders of Afe Babalola.
The book, published in July 2024 received little attention not until Farotimi was arrested in Lagos and transported to Ado-Ekiti where Babalola owns a university.
Farotimi’s work was directly rooted in the systemic corruption in the Nigeria’s judiciary.
The author, Farotimi accused the 93-year-old senior lawyer, Babalola of tampering with the court decision through bribes and other corrupt practices.
In section one of the book, Farotimi said that Babalola “compromised the Supreme Court and the remaining semblance of integrity it might have had,” highlighting the specific case that the lawyer manipulated the court decision for personal gain.
The arrest of Farotimi sparkled speculations on how Babalola used his influence to undermine others.
This arose curiosity on the side of the readers to learn more about the allegations which have also drawn international attention.
Surprisingly, Farotimi’s book surpassed the other books with beating titles like Why Nations Fail.
According to the charge sheet gotten by the Peoples Gazette, the Nigerian police charged Farotimi for publishing a book that stirred up fear and alarm to the public.
Activists, lawyers and civil society groups has stated that the charges are baseless and Farotimi should be released.
Reports have it that over the years, Babalola have faced series of allegations relating to his corrupt practices.
