Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have embarked on a fresh strike because the area council have failed to comply with the new minimum wage of N70,000.
They stopped working three days to round off the first term examinations for the primary school pupils.
FCT primary school pupils have experienced repeated strike actions that have been embarked by their teachers.
The previous one was 14 days to resumption which was on September 18, 2024. Later on, the strike was called off on October 7, 2024 which lasted for three weeks.
FCT Chairman of the Nigeria Teacher Union (NUT), Kubwa chapter, Comrade Ameh Baba, stated that they had to take the necessary action since the area council chairmen in the territory have continued to owe them arrears.
He said, “And now the ultimatum of December 1st deadline given by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for any state to comply with the minimum wage of N70,000 has come to effect. Hence we don’t have any option, but to comply.”
Comrade Ameh Baba stated that FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike have approved the new minimum wage which will commence with that November salary but the UBEC teachers have not gotten theirs.
He added that the FCT primary school teachers will continue with the strike if they are not paid N40,00 peculiar allowance, and N35,000 wage award which is up to a year.
