The planned discussion between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), set for today, has been pushed back.
ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed the delay on Monday, revealing that the meeting, first announced by the Education Minister last Friday, will now happen on Wednesday, August 28.
No specific reason was given for the rescheduling. This gathering is crucial as university professors have threatened to begin a nationwide strike.
The decision follows agreements made during ASUU’s national executive council meeting at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024.
ASUU’s requests involve better conditions for lecturers, increased university funding, and a stop to the proliferation of universities across the country.
The imminent strike is a reaction to the Federal Government’s failure to uphold the renegotiated agreement with ASUU from 2009.
