The federal government has inaugurated the new board members of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
In a statement released on Tuesday, Mohammed Manga, the director of information and public relations for the Ministry of Finance, announced that the federal government has tasked the new board members with exploring innovative mechanisms.
Manga revealed that Mairiga Katuka has been appointed as the chairman of SEC, with Emomotimi Agama serving as the director-general of the commission.
The other newly-inaugurated members include Frana Chukwuogor as executive commissioner (legal and enforcement), Bola Ajomale as executive commissioner (operations), Samiya Usman as executive commissioner (corporate services), and Lekan Belo and Kasimu Garba Kurfi as non-executive commissioners.
During the inauguration at his office, Wale Edun, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, emphasized that one of the key objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s administration is to implement fiscal policies aimed at improving Nigeria’s economic growth and development through effective financial market regulations.
“SEC, as the apex financial market regulator, must be innovative and leverage technology to address financial market challenges in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration,” Edun stated.
The minister also urged the board to focus on the rapidly evolving crypto space to protect investors and the general public.
“I urge you to develop a master plan for regulating the crypto sector according to established guidelines,” Edun said. While congratulating the new board members on their appointments, Edun noted that they were selected based on their impressive track records.
He expressed confidence that the experience and expertise of the new board members would lead to the desired transformation of the SEC.
Edun called on them to utilize their wealth of experience to achieve the policy objectives of the current administration.
