The federal government has cautioned foreign parties against getting involved in the current nationwide protests. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, delivered this message to the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja.
Tuggar highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a democracy advocate, supports Nigerians’ basic rights like freedom of assembly and speech. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the government will not tolerate violent actions or foreign meddling in national matters.
Tuggar stated, “Nigeria is no exception. The government will take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.”
The minister restated that while Nigeria values its international relationships, any foreign entity discovered backing the protesters or meddling in internal affairs will face suitable consequences.
Tuggar noted, “Indeed, more than at any time before, we solicit your understanding and collaboration in the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government in addressing the economic challenges confronting the country to achieve a better life for every Nigerian at home and abroad.”
Top government officials, including Minister Mohammed Idris and Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, attended a briefing where the government warned against foreign involvement in ongoing protests.
Foreign flags, like Russian flags, have been seen supporting the protests in Kano and Abuja. The demonstrations, which began on August 1 and are set to end on August 10, have included peaceful gatherings and violent clashes.
