Tomato prices have plummeted in Nigerian markets due to new harvests, according to traders in Ketu and Berger markets. A big basket of tomatoes now sells for N55,000 to N60,000, down from N150,000 a few months ago. Similarly, a crate of tomatoes has dropped from N55,000 to N30,000, while a large basket of habanero pepper now costs N25,000, down from N55,000.
Traders attribute the price drop to the seasonal availability of tomatoes and peppers, as well as improved transportation due to petrol availability. Prices have also decreased in Berger market, with a big basket of tomatoes now selling for N50,000-N60,000, down from N150,000-N200,000.
In Abuja’s Dutse market, traders report similar price reductions, with a basket of tomatoes now selling for N8,000, down from N13,000-N15,000. Red bell pepper and habanero pepper prices have also decreased.
The Tomatoes Growers Association of Nigeria had previously blamed price hikes on the destruction of tomatoes by the ‘Tuta absoluta’ pest. However, with the new harvest, prices are expected to stabilize from August to November, making tomatoes more affordable.
