Netflix has revealed that the highly anticipated biographical film, House of Ga’a, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, will make its premiere on the streaming service on July 26, 2024.
Netflix made an announcement on Instagram on Thursday, June 20, 2024, and along with it, they shared exclusive behind-the-scenes images from the set that had never been seen before.
The caption read, “Witness the rise and fall of a ruthless kingmaker. House of Ga’a is coming to Netflix, July 26″.
The movie tells the story of Bashorun Gaha (Gaa), a significant figure in the history of the Yoruba people in Nigeria.
He held the position of Bashorun in the Oyo empire during the 18th century, where he used deception and voodoo to rule over his people.
The biographical film stars Femi Branch, Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Ibrahim Chatta, Dele Odule, Bimbo Manuel, Lateef Adedimeji, and Femi Adebayo.
Other members of the cast include Gabriel Afolayan, Jide ‘JBlaze’ Oyegbile, Seun Akindele, Yemi Blaq, Adeniyi Johnson, Muyiwa Ademola, Willam Benson, Gbenga Titiloye, and Kunle Coker.
Austen-Peters, the director, has been increasingly involved in biopics to educate the younger generation about historical individuals and culture.
This year, she also released another biopic called Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, based on a political activist.
She said, “For me, growing up you hear a lot about American heroes, you hear about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Winnie Mandela, you’re asking yourself, ‘Where are the Nigerian heroes?’ It’s important that we begin to tell those stories. A lot of our children do not have that historical perspective. They don’t get these stories, because we’re not producing enough of them.”
