The Esan Advancement Group has issued a warning regarding an alleged scheme to apprehend Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the Edo State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in anticipation of the Edo governorship election set for September 21, 2024.
In an open communication directed to the Presidency, the Department of State Security (DSS), and the National Security Adviser, the group accused certain political figures of orchestrating a campaign to tarnish and incapacitate Dr. Aziegbemi through the dissemination of false information and propaganda.
This concern arose following the circulation of a forged document on social media that wrongly attributed incendiary statements to the PDP Chairman, falsely implicating the Presidency and other entities in a plot to manipulate the election results.
The group alleges that these strategies are a component of a broader plan designed to discredit Dr. Aziegbemi and undermine the prospects of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming election.
Kio Eromosele, the leader of the Esan Advancement Group, said: “This attempt to discredit and remove Dr Aziegbemi from circulation just days before the election is nothing short of political persecution.
“We call on the relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that this democratic process is not compromised.”
Furthermore, the group encouraged the residents of Edo State and the Nigerian populace to ignore the fabricated information, emphasizing that Dr. Aziegbemi remains committed to upholding the values of justice, equity, and democratic principles.
Madam Blessing Aigbogu, the group’s general secretary, added: “The arrest of Dr Aziegbemi at this crucial time would send the wrong message about the integrity of the election process.
“We ask the authorities to refrain from allowing political manipulation to undermine democracy in Edo State.”
