Group Warns Of Looming Food Shortage Amid Widespread Flooding Across State

Date:

The Christian Conscience, a Non Governmental Organization, has raised concerns about potential food shortages in Nigeria due to recent flooding and security challenges impacting farmers, particularly in the Northern region.

The organization’s National Publicity Director, Tunji Oguntuase, shared this warning during a statement released to NAIJATRAFFIC Online.

One of the key decisions made at their monthly executive meeting in Lagos was to highlight the urgent need for government intervention at all levels to address the aftermath of flooding, which has become a global issue with severe consequences.

The organization emphasized the outdated infrastructure of dams across the country, originally constructed to suit past conditions, and stressed the necessity for modernizing or constructing new dams to adapt to the changing climate and growing population.

With reference to recent events in Maiduguri, Borno State, where dam collapse resulted in significant destruction, the group urged the government to take immediate action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The position of the group on this issue, was jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr. Mrs Yetunde Akinluyi and the National General Secretary, Dr. Kolawole Verrals,” the statement noted.

The group emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent flooding as the rainy season intensifies, to prevent loss of life and property damage.

They also expressed sympathy with the Borno State Government and Maiduguri residents affected by the flooding, and prayed for a swift end to the crisis.
