The House of Representatives has called the acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra, Carol Arinze-Umobi, to discuss issues with how projects are being carried out at the university.
This invitation was mentioned in a statement by Abubakar Fulata, the head of the committee, on Wednesday, August 14th. Fulata mentioned that the invitation follows the committee’s visit to UNIZIK in Awka.
He explained that the purpose of the invitation is not to unfairly target the VC but to understand why the university’s project progress does not match the information provided.
The chairman stated that the committee found discrepancies between the data shared by the VC and what they observed during their visit to the university. Fulata expressed the committee’s surprise at how the university claimed to have made N1.5 billion in 2023 but spent N3 billion from the same income.
He pointed out that using funds without proper approval from the parliament goes against the Constitution, and presenting inaccurate figures damages the credibility of the university’s management.
Fulata highlighted specific issues such as fully paying for a project that was less than 40% finished, which goes against the country’s financial rules.
