House of Reps issues 30-day deadline to JAMB to remit N3.6bn

Date:

The House of Representatives has mandated the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to transfer N3.602 billion to the Federal Government Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF).

This directive, issued by Hon. Bamidele Salam, the Public Accounts Committee Chairman, was issued during an inquiry session held in Abuja.

Salam underscored that the remittance was a legal requirement and should not be subject to individual interpretation. He clarified that it is a legal obligation or regulation, addressing JAMB’s objections regarding the percentage of revenue remitted.

The Committee has set a 30-day timeframe for JAMB to adhere to the directive and furnish proof of payment.

The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) had earlier presented JAMB to the Committee due to its failure to remit its operational surplus.

According to Mr. Bello Aliyu from the FRC, JAMB’s debts had surged to N3.602 billion by 2022.

He stated, “We notified them on March 14 and again on August 31 but received no response.”

JAMB’s Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Mufutau Bello, explained that the disagreement stemmed from a transition from a 25 percent to a 50 percent remittance policy.

He pointed out that the government had decreased JAMB’s registration fee from N5,000 to N3,500 in 2019 to enhance access to affordable education.

Bello argued that JAMB had followed a 25 percent remittance guideline and had never remitted more.

The resolution of this issue will depend on JAMB’s compliance with the House’s instruction and the ongoing dialogues with the FRC.
