Nigerian singer leaves social media users stunned and pondering, with minds racing, as he introduces a fresh subgenre of Afrobeat music, sparking thought-provoking discussions.
He wrote;
“ckay IS the first. i pioneered many vibes afrobeat artists thrive off today……iykyk. y’all laughed when i came up with emo afrobeat and was on tiktok all day but many are now doing the same thing, calling it ridiculous names (& making $$). you’re welcome sha”
A heated discussion has been brewing among musicians regarding Afrobeat’s classification, sparked by Wizkid and Flavour’s recent declarations that they prefer not to be pigeonholed as Afrobeat artists, challenging the genre’s definition and boundaries.
Wizkid’s decision to dissociate himself from the Afrobeat genre sparked widespread outrage and criticism online, with many social media users expressing displeasure and disapproval over his statement.
Following the VMA Awards, OAP Do2dtun slammed South African singer Tyla for accepting the Best Afrobeat Artist award, arguing that she shouldn’t have accepted it since she identifies as an Amapiano artist, and instead should have relinquished the award, deeming herself unworthy of the Afrobeat category recognition.
Do2dtun further expressed his discontent, stating that Nigerian artists have compromised their cultural heritage for financial gain, thereby relinquishing their rightful dominance in the Afrobeat genre and allowing international artists to usurp their position.
