Obi Cubana, a Nigerian billionaire, shared the story behind his mother’s lavish funeral in an interview with Chude Jideonwo.
He revealed that his family has a history of not living beyond 80 years, with his father passing at 66, grandfather at 78, and uncle at 75.
Determined to break this generational curse, Obi Cubana and his siblings had been planning a grand celebration for their mother’s 80th birthday.
When she passed away at 79, they decided to channel their efforts into giving her a magnificent burial instead, ensuring she received a fitting tribute despite not reaching the milestone they had hoped for.
“In my family, I am saying it for the first time: nobody has lived up to 80. My father died at 66, my father’s brother died at 75, my grandfather died at 78, and I told my mum, you will break this. I told her to break it if it’s a generational curse or something. I promised her that for the burial I would throw for her, nobody would break, and we started saving up for that.
I think she died on 31st December; she was 78 and a half, and we were all looking forward to her 80th birthday. But what happened happened, so let’s celebrate her. At least she almost broke it”.
The Nigerian billionaire, gained widespread attention in 2021 for the extravagant funeral he held for his mother in Oba, Anambra state.
The ceremony was attended by numerous business executives, pop stars like Davido, and actors, showcasing immense wealth and grandeur.
Reflecting on his journey, Obi Cubana shared his experiences, including a challenging trip to his convocation at UNN, where he lost a precious gift from his uncle.
Today, he is renowned for his philanthropic efforts, such as gifting millions to former classmates and providing scholarships to those in need.
His business acumen and generosity earned him a Doctorate in Business Administration from Enugu State University.
