Inspector-General of Police gets his tenure extended

Date:

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light to extend Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s term by three years.

This information was shared by sources from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Even though the IGP is turning 60 tomorrow, September 4, 2024, which is the retirement age, his tenure has been extended.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, handed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) a letter on Monday, officially extending his tenure.

A senior security official at the SGF Office also confirmed that the IGP received the extension letter from Akume on Monday morning.

This action follows the Senate’s approval of a bill that revised the Police Act 2020, allowing police officers to serve for up to 40 years or until they turn 65, whichever comes first.

Egbetokun, who became IGP in June 2023, was set to retire the next day, but his term has been prolonged.
