Amnesty International strongly criticized the recent raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress headquarters in Abuja by security forces.
Isa Sanusi, the country director of AI, described the assault on the NLC as a deliberate and malicious act aimed at instilling fear in the union’s leaders and followers.
He stated, “Amnesty International strongly condemns the brazen invasion of the headquarters of Nigeria Labour Congress by a contingent of armed security personnel.
“The chilling raid last night appears to be part of a sinister and calculated attack designed to intimidate the labour union.”
Sanusi emphasized worries regarding the well-being of NLC officials, stating that based on international human rights laws and norms, trade unions should not face reprisals for their involvement in activities.
He also noted that Nigeria is bound to uphold and safeguard the rights of trade unions as stipulated by international human rights law.
Sanusi added, “Under international human rights law, Nigeria has an obligation not only to respect the rights of trade unions but also to protect these rights from abuse.”
