Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun appointed as Nigeria’s 23rd Chief Justice

Date:

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has been officially appointed as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu.

The ceremony where she was sworn in took place on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with many important guests in attendance.

After getting the Senate’s approval last week, Justice Kekere-Ekun’s path to becoming the head of Nigeria’s judiciary was cleared.

She is now the second woman to hold this significant position, following Justice Alooma Muktar, who served as CJN from 2012 to 2014.

The ceremony was attended by three former Chief Justices – Justice Alooma Muktar, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, and Justice Walter Onnoghen – along with Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who was in the role before Justice Kekere-Ekun.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s family and other Supreme Court judges were also present to celebrate her success, signifying a new era for Nigeria’s legal system.

During the oath-taking, President Tinubu stressed the judiciary’s crucial role in upholding laws and ensuring public trust in governance.

He showed confidence in Justice Kekere-Ekun’s ability to lead with integrity, fairness, and wisdom, especially during Nigeria’s legal and constitutional challenges.
