During a demonstration at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara was embarrassed by protesters participating in the #EndBadGovernance movement.
While addressing the demonstrators, Fubara expressed appreciation for their peaceful conduct, and assured them that their grievances would be communicated to President Bola Tinubu.
However, the governor’s attempt to pacify the protesters by offering them money for “pure water” was met with an embarrassing response from the demonstrators.
Fubara said, “I thank you for being peaceful. I thank you for coming. I feel your pain. I want to assure you that I will deliver your message to the President.”
Governor Sim Fubara’s effort to placate the #EndBadGovernance protesters by offering them money to buy pure water was met with an angry reaction from the crowd.
When the governor said, “I will give you a small thing for you to drink pure water,” his condescending gesture provoked a strong backlash from the demonstrators, who were unimpressed by his attempt to dismiss their grievances with a trivial handout.
They were clearly frustrated by the governor’s condescending offer of money for water. The protesters responded with chants of “No no, keep your money, we want good governance in Nigeria.”
They also called for the resignation of President Tinubu, further intensifying their demands.
Despite Fubara’s attempts to clarify his offer and address the protesters’ concerns, the demonstrators remained unyielding in their discontent. Faced with the growing hostility of the crowd, the governor ultimately had to retreat, waving his hands in a gesture of farewell as he stepped down from the platform in front of the government house, unable to quell the protesters’ outrage.
