During the monthly sanitation exercise in Kwara State held on Saturdays, a Special Court arrested and prosecuted over 300 individuals for violating sanitation laws.
This event, spanning three hours from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, occurred in various locations throughout the state, with a significant number of offenders apprehended in the state capital, Ilorin.
Despite the considerable number of violators, the state government appreciated residents for complying with sanitation regulations, which aided in the success of the exercise across towns and villages, including the capital.
The Ministry of Environment’s Press Secretary, Kamaldeen Aliagan, relayed the message of the state Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Musa-Buge, who expressed satisfaction with the increased compliance witnessed during the exercise.
However, Musa-Buge noted disappointment at the number of offenders apprehended despite government awareness campaigns through various media channels.
She emphasized the importance of adhering to the designated three-hour sanitation period to keep residential and business environments clean and safe.
She said, “Despite the enlightenment programmes and campaigns on radio and other electronic media, it is sad and unfortunate that almost 300 sanitation offenders were apprehended within the metropolis and subsequently charged to various mobile courts during the exercise.”
The Commissioner extended gratitude to mobile court judges, monitoring teams, security agents, transport unions, and other relevant stakeholders for their dedicated efforts during the exercise. It was stressed that sustaining this level of compliance is vital for ensuring a healthy living environment in Kwara State.
