Lagos Authorities urge Calm As Flooding Inundates Roads, Homes, And Schools

Date:

After a heavy rainfall that commenced in the early hours of Wednesday, numerous areas in Lagos have been inundated, resulting in severe flooding.

The torrential rain not only led to the displacement of residents but also submerged major roads, leaving commuters stranded and motorists unable to navigate through the waterlogged streets.

Homes, educational institutions, businesses, and markets are currently underwater as a consequence of the flooding.

Following the rainfall, individuals such as business owners, students, and employees have encountered challenges in traveling to their respective destinations.

One of the vital routes affected by the flooding is the Iyana-Oworo, Olopo Meji, which links to the 3rd Mainland Bridge and is currently submerged, making the road nearly impassable and causing traffic congestion that extends to the Alapere area.

An anonymous user on X platform, identified as #JayNaijaTv, posted a video showcasing the flooded region along with a caption.

“Iyana-Oworo, Olopo Meji area heading to 3rd Mainland Bridge this morning is completely flooded, causing long traffic that extends to Alapere.”

Widespread flooding in Ago, Okota, and Oke-Afa areas resulted in submerged houses and roads, with the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway also severely affected, leading to massive traffic congestion.

Despite the chaos, the Lagos State Government is urging residents to remain calm, assuring that the floodwaters will soon recede.

According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the flooding is a result of the state’s geographical terrain and climate change as reported.

He stated, “The Agency and other key responders are on high alert in case of any emergency. We urging the good people of Lagos to remain calm and refrain from any non-essential travel due to the incidence of flash floods across the State. They are already beginning to dissipate,”

The head of LASEMA (Lagos State Emergency Management Agency) has guaranteed that the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Lagos residents.

However, he cautioned against reckless waste disposal and construction along waterways, emphasizing that such actions would only worsen the flooding situation in the state.
