Lagos Urges Miners To Reduce Environmental Hazards

Date:

The Lagos State Government is urging stakeholders in the mineral resources sector to adopt practices that prevent environmental pollution and reduce the risks associated with sand spillage on roads.

At a forum held in Alausa, Ikeja, on Friday, Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Okanlawon Olowu, emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices in developing the state’s mineral resources sector.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, brought together stakeholders to discuss strategies for sustainable mining practices that prioritize environmental protection and safety.

He said, “Permit me to recognise the indispensable role that mineral resources play in sustaining our existence and in powering the infrastructure development of our dear state.

“The minerals you mine serve as the foundation upon which our urban landscape is built. However, this meeting should be seen as an opportunity to harmonise the responsible management of mining and dredging operations, ensuring environmental stability and sustainability while reducing the negative impact of mining to the barest minimum.”

Abiola Kosegbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, urged participants to collaborate with the state government in its efforts to promote sustainable mining practices and mitigate environmental damage in Lagos State.

Meanwhile, Sabur Oluwa, Chairman of the state House of Assembly’s Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, emphasized the importance of adhering to relevant laws regulating the solid minerals sector and supporting government initiatives that protect the state’s vital resources for the well-being of its citizens.
