While many Nigerians are actively participating in the nationwide protest, and numerous celebrities are showing their support on social media, actress Tonto Dikeh has taken a divergent stance.
She has opted to commend the President for his perceived accomplishments and the country’s progress, a viewpoint that starkly contrasts with the protest’s objectives, making her a lone voice of praise amidst a sea of dissent.
“Statistics don’t lie: everyone is working to get this country to where we want it to be.
One thing about Nigerians is that if they don’t like you, nothing you do will ever be good enough for them. Let’s not deny this glaring truth. Stay safe and make wise decisions always.” she wrote.
Tonto Dikeh shared statistics that appear to highlight positive economic trends, including increased foreign reserves, higher minimum wage, reduced forex backlog, increased oil production, and improved debt-to-revenue ratio.
However, these claims contradict the protesters’ concerns about rising fuel prices, food costs, and living expenses, suggesting a disconnect between the actress’s views and the protesters’ grievances.
Tonto Dikeh is the first celebrity to publicly discourage Nigerians from participating in the nationwide protest, unlike many of her colleagues who are actively supporting the movement.
However, she is not the first to openly endorse President Tinubu, as Toyin Abraham and Yul Edochie have already expressed their support for him.
Toyin Abraham faced intense backlash for her endorsement, with many demanding she reveal the President’s plans for Nigeria, which she claimed he shared with her.
The backlash escalated to online harassment, leading Toyin to arrest one of her trolls, which further fueled the controversy and sparked a boycott movement against her.
