Minister Urges For Eco-Friendly Housing Designs

Date:

Minister Ahmed Dangiwa advocated for Nigeria’s housing sector to adopt eco-friendly, sustainable, and climate-resilient designs, urging professionals to embrace innovative solutions to address the country’s housing challenges.

He stressed the importance of prioritizing environmentally responsible and resource-efficient approaches during his remarks at the 2024 Archibuilt Exposition in Abuja, organized by the Nigerian Institute of Architects.

“We have seen transformative ideas presented at previous expositions, from using sustainable building materials to energy-efficient designs, water conservation techniques, and zero-emission construction technologies.

“The ongoing conversations will shape the future of construction in Nigeria and resonate globally. Innovation, built on technology and equitable resource utilisation models, is what we need”, Dangiwa stated.

The Minister emphasized architects’ vital role in achieving SDG 11, stressing their ability to create inclusive, resilient, and adaptable urban spaces that foster sustainable cities and communities.

“We must ask ourselves: How can we ensure that the cities we build are not only environmentally sustainable but also inclusive and socially equitable?”

“How can we foster urban ecosystems that promote healthy living, economic development, and environmental stewardship but yet groundbreaking enough?” the Minister queried.

The Minister urged architects to develop innovative, homegrown solutions to address the strain on natural resources, asking them to think creatively about how to respond.

He also encouraged the use of local materials to minimize carbon footprints while preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

“Optimising the use of local materials like bamboo, laterite, and compressed earth blocks will help to reduce carbon footprints while maintaining the structural integrity of our buildings.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable housing, infrastructure, and urban development,” Dangiwa stated.

At the event, Minister Dangiwa shared that the 3,112 Karsana Renewed Hope City, along with six other similar projects, are in the process of obtaining EDGE Green Certification, which will result in the largest green footprint in Nigeria’s and potentially Africa’s housing development history.

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo emphasized the importance of reimagining cities as dynamic ecosystems, stating, “We must invest in cities that promote mobility, reduce congestion, and improve the quality of lives of the people. We must also focus on mixed-use neighbourhoods that promote togetherness.”

He also encouraged architects to establish a think tank to provide the Minister with periodic advice on practical innovations.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Institute of Architects President Mobolaji Adeniyi highlighted the exposition’s goal of showcasing innovative products and technologies that explore the intersection of architecture, technology, and innovation.
