Due to ongoing issues related to promotions and welfare, the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies, which is affiliated with the Trade Union Congress and represents employees of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has announced an indefinite strike.
The strike decision was made after several discussions with NAFDAC management did not resolve critical issues concerning the staff, as reported by ChannelsTV on Monday.
The dissatisfied employees remarked that their complaints had gone unaddressed, leading to this significant measure.
“This decision is a result of NAFDAC Management’s failure to address the critical issues outlined in the communiqué within the given time frame,” emphasized Dr. Ejor Michael, Secretary of the TUC, in a statement regarding the strike.
A communiqué identified as SSASCGOC/NAFDAC/COMMUNIQUE/VOL.1, issued on October 4, 2024, listed several important unresolved matters. These include:
– A review of the 2024 Promotion Examination Results
– The appointment of Directors for Public Affairs and Special Duties
– Placement for Training Institute for the North West and North East regions
– Reforming the content of Promotion Examinations
– Timely disclosure of APER/PER/KPI Scores
– Resolution of Tied Promotion Examination Scores
– Setting criteria for qualification and conversion for Promotion Examinations
– Establishment of a Psychology Officer Cadre as outlined in the HOS Circular
– Relocating the Danida Fellowship and centralizing training to the Personnel and Research Services (PRS)
– Settling all overdue burial costs, life insurance, and repatriation allowances
– Payment of salary arrears for employees dating back to 2022, among other requests.
The communiqué stated that after thorough discussions, “unanimously resolved to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike across all NAFDAC formations, commencing Monday, 7th October 2024.”
It also instructed all employees to cease their services in adherence to the strike measure.
“In view of the foregoing, all staff are advised to remove their personal belongings from their offices, as no one, regardless of rank or cadre, will be allowed entry into any NAFDAC office during the strike period,” the statement warned.
The announcement highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stressing, “The Congress considers this ongoing inaction insufferable and accentuates that the industrial action will continue unabated until all demands specified in the communiqué are fully met.”
SSASCGOC State and Zonal Coordinators have been assigned to ensure compliance with this directive, as the union calls on its members to cooperate in executing the indefinite strike efficiently.
