Ali Ndume, a former Senate leader, extended his sympathy to the people and government of Borno State on Tuesday, following a catastrophic flood that inundated numerous homes and areas of Maiduguri, the state capital.
In a statement released to the press in Abuja, Ndume, who represents Borno South, urged the Federal Government to promptly provide assistance and support to the State Government in its efforts to aid affected residents and homes.
According to the State Government, the flood, which was caused by the reported failure of the Alau Dam that had been filled for a week, resulted in widespread damage and displacement.
“Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all the residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties.
“The Alau Dam water has broken down another channel that is currently destroying farms, and the water is heading toward the river bank,” a statement by the State Government revealed.
Senator Ndume, recently returned from Borno where he supported families affected by insurgency, expressed devastation upon hearing about the destructive flood.
He emphasized the need for collective action, including development partners and government agencies, to promptly assist affected residents and homes in Maiduguri.
While acknowledging the state government’s proactive efforts to evaluate and support affected areas, Ndume stressed that the Federal Government’s immediate intervention is crucial due to the severity of the damage.
The situation has forced some institutions, including the University of Maiduguri, to shut down temporarily.
The university’s registrar, Ahmad Lawan, announced the closure, offering sympathies to affected staff and students.
