The National Emergency Management Agency reported that a devastating flood in the country has affected at least 611,201 individuals, resulting in 201 fatalities, 2,119 injuries, and damage to 83,457 houses.
This information was shared during a joint briefing by the Strategic Communications and Inter-agency Policy Committee, held at the office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Abdullahi Maiwada, spokesperson for the Nigerian Customs Service, who presented the briefing, the flood has had a widespread impact, affecting over 154 local government areas across 29 states and displacing 225,169 people.
He said, “NEMA is now focused on coordinating relief interventions, with current flood impacts reported as affecting 29 states, 154 local government areas, and displacing 225,169 people.
“Overall, 611,201 individuals have been impacted, 2,119 injured, 201 lives lost, 83,457 houses damaged, and 115,265 hectares of farmland affected.”
Abdullahi Maiwada revealed that, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive, the National Emergency Management Agency has provided 42,000 metric tons of food assistance to the 611,201 individuals affected by the flood.
He said, “The National Emergency Management Agency has completed the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of food commodities, as authorized by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to vulnerable Nigerians across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
“This initiative was carried out in coordination with key stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Department of State Services, anti-corruption agencies, and the Office of the National Security Adviser. ”
He further emphasized the ICPC recovered N21,529,742.19, closed twelve cases, and conducted biometric capture of 85 public officials.
Maiwada said, “The ICPC made notable progress in addressing corruption in the healthcare sector. They arrested healthcare workers for diverting supplies and uncovered tax evasion issues involving NASRDA and other MDAs. The Commission recovered N21,529,742.19, closed twelve cases, and conducted biometric capture of 85 public officials, recording 156 bank accounts under the PND portfolio.”
