The Calabar High Court Judge, Justice Elias Abua, has decided to delay his ruling on a request made by the claimants in the renewed Obong of Calabar dispute.
The legal dispute involves Anthony Ani, a former finance minister, and the current Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Etubom Ekpo Abasi Otu V.
The court was initially set to deliver its ruling on the interlocutory application filed by the claimants in the case with the reference HC/278/2023, involving Etubom Essien Ekpenyong Efiok, Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon, and Etubom Micah Archibong.
Nevertheless, while the session was underway, the court made the decision to postpone the final judgment and set a new date for the ruling, which is now scheduled for September 26, 2024.
Since 2010, there has been an ongoing legal dispute over the position of the Obong of Calabar between the current Obong, Abasi-Otu V, and former finance minister, Ani.
The case has reached the Supreme Court, which ordered a new selection process for the Obong. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling in January 2023, Edidem Abasi-Otu V was properly re-selected and officially declared as the Obong of Calabar by the Etuboms’ Conclave.
