Every year, Nigeria loses over $1.1 billion to malaria which has a huge effect on the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
It was during the inaugural meeting of the Advisory on Malaria Elimination in Nigeria (AMEN) in Abuja that the Coordinating Minister of Health & Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, revealed it.
He stated that malaria is not just a health issue but it is also an economic emergency that must be sorted out urgently.
He further explained that Nigeria have recorded 27% of malaria cases and 31% of malaria-related deaths.
He said that in the year, 2022, it was malaria that killed over 180,000 Nigerian children (5 years old age bracket).
He noted that the federal government has taken a strategic move to launch the advisory board which will aid in alleviating malaria and its impact.
