Nigerians Urges To Eat Food While Hot To Prevent Cholera

Date:

In light of the recent cholera outbreak in various states, Olakunle Williams, the National President of the Pest Control Association of Nigeria, has recommended that Nigerians properly cook their food and consume it while it is still hot to prevent illness.

According to information gathered by Naijatraffic, the association expressed worries about the surge of the disease and stressed the critical importance of immediate and unified action to contain the further spread and protect public health.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal sickness caused by the Vibrio cholera bacterium, typically transmitted via contaminated water and food sources.

Common symptoms of cholera include sudden, intense, and painless watery diarrhea, often accompanied by vomiting and nausea.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has documented a cholera outbreak in 30 states, with a total of 1,141 suspected cases, 65 confirmed cases, and 30 fatalities reported from January 1 to June 11.

As of the latest update on Friday, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, revealed that the state has recorded 24 fatalities, 35 confirmed cases, and 417 suspected cases spanning 20 Local Government Areas.

The President of PECAN further highlighted the significance of maintaining sanitation and hygiene practices in the fight against cholera spread.

In a series of recommendations provided to Nigerians, Williams advised,

“Ensure clean water supply. Boil water before drinking or use water purification tablets. Store drinking water in clean, covered containers.

“Practice good hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food. Use hand sanitisers where water is not readily available.

“Maintain food safety by cooking food thoroughly and eating it while it is hot. Avoid raw or undercooked foods, especially seafood. Wash fruits and vegetables with safe water before consumption.

“Improve sanitation: Dispose of human waste properly; use latrines or other sanitation systems. Keep the environment clean and free from refuse.”

He also called for proper waste management to prevent flies and pests infestations that can contaminate food and water sources.

The PECAN president noted, “Engage professional pest control services to manage any infestations, as pests can exacerbate the spread of cholera.

“Seek immediate medical attention: If symptoms of cholera appear, such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting, seek medical help immediately. Rehydration is crucial; use oral rehydration salts or appropriate home solutions.”

Williams emphasized the associations’ commitment to supporting Lagosians by offering expert advice and services.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to the preventive measures outlined above. Our association stands ready to collaborate with health authorities and other stakeholders to mitigate the impact of this outbreak. Together, we can overcome this public health challenge and ensure a healthier environment for all,” he pinpointed.
