The NYSC has spoken about the raise in the monthly allowance for corps members to N77,000, clarifying that the new amount is not in effect yet.
Even though the higher allowance was approved, corps members still received the old amount of N33,000 in September.
The NYSC explained that the increase was meant to start in July 2024 following the new Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, but delays from the government have postponed its implementation.
“Everything is a process,” Embu explained during a conversation with SaharaReporters.
“After making the pronouncement, the government has to work on it to be able to pay. It is not as if it is automatic.”
Corps members were said to be let down when they received their September allowance of N33,000 instead of the expected N77,000 as promised.
“They have not paid, but the people around me who were paid got 33k (N33,000) instead of the N77,000 promised,” an anonymous corps member stated.
Embu stressed that it is not the NYSC’s job to handle the payments; that’s the Federal Government’s responsibility. She also mentioned that there’s no set date yet for when the raise will happen, stating, “I can’t say if it is going to be implemented this month (October). Just like everybody is waiting for the minimum wage, we are also waiting.”
The delay has worried corps members, a lot of whom were hoping to see the higher allowance kick in right away.
