Ogun To Penalize Seven Firms Over Environmental Pollution

Date:

The Ogun State Government has announced plans to penalize seven companies located in Veepee Avenue, Sango Ota, for environmental pollution.

These companies, namely Purechem Manufacturing Limited, Olympic Inks/Salient Industries, Ecomed Pharmaceuticals Limited, Nigerian Distilleries Limited, Industrial Mineral Products, Bhumee Inks Limited, and Classic Soap Industries Nigeria Limited, were discovered to be releasing untreated waste into the community.

The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency revealed this information on Tuesday, stating that the companies will face consequences for their actions, which were uncovered through an investigation by the Ogun State Ministry of Environment.

“A recent investigation by the @Moeogunstate and the Office of the Special Adviser (Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency) has found several companies in Veepee Avenue, Sango Ota, culpable of discharging untreated effluents into the Ten Acres Association Community.

“The investigation, conducted between June 14 and 19, 2024, revealed that companies such as Purechem Manufacturing Ltd, Olympic Inks/Salient Industries, Ecomed Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Nigerian Distilleries Ltd, Industrial Mineral Products, Bhumee Inks Ltd and Classic Soap Industries Nigeria Ltd were guilty of environmental pollution.

“The report recommends stern action against the companies, including treating their effluents before discharge and channelling them into the agreed gorge within the community. The companies are also to be sanctioned for their environmental violations.”

Information was obtained that the Director of Inspection and Compliance Monitoring, Osinaike, has submitted reports and recommendations regarding the environmental pollution issue to the Special Adviser to the Governor, Oluwadare Kehinde, for review and approval.

Previously, in July, NAIJATRAFFIC reported that residents and traders in Ibafo, Ogun State, complained about Country Kitchen restaurant’s poor waste management, leading to environmental pollution, which they feared could cause a cholera outbreak.

Upon visiting the community, our correspondent observed that the restaurant daily discharged foul-smelling liquid waste into the community’s drainage system, posing a threat to both the residents’ daily lives and their health.
