Fuel sellers are saying they can only sell what they have because it’s hard to move fuel around the country right now.
The scarcity of fuel has resulted in price hikes, with certain gas stations selling fuel for prices ranging from ₦800 to ₦1,000 per liter. Exploitative individuals in the black market have exploited the situation by selling fuel at excessively high rates.
Billy Gillis-Harry, the President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association (PETROAN), has stated that marketers are currently dealing with substantial limitations in the supply chain, hindering their ability to distribute fuel in accordance with the country’s demand.
Gillis-Harry spoke about this on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday. He said the shortage is because it’s hard to transfer fuel from one ship to another. Until this gets fixed, fuel sellers can only sell what they have. This has caused a shortage that is affecting many Nigerians.
He stated, “I think until we get our supply challenges sorted out efficiently and abundantly, we will not be able to get out of this circle.
“I believe you must have heard the NNPC’s communications director who explained that the issues at stake are still logistics-related.
“So until they get that resolved, we may just be managing the little they bring, and give to us to distribute among our members.
“NNPCL is doing its best to bring in products bit by bit, and we can only supply what we have.”
“The logistics issue is about ship-to-ship transfer. Until the ship gets products, it cannot deliver to any of the depots. And until depots have products, we the retailers cannot also have access to products,”
He added, “We have been speaking with NNPCL. We encourage them to do more, and I can assure you that they are trying their best.”
