Our members are out of business’ — poultry group laments high cost of feed

Date:

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has raised concerns that over half of poultry farmers in Oyo state are currently out of business due to various challenges. Omidokun Oyekunle, chairman of PAN’s Oyo state chapter, emphasized the significance of the poultry industry, which contributes around 25% to Nigeria’s GDP.

Oyekunle urged the government to address the challenges facing poultry farmers, including the high cost of feed ingredients like maize and soybeans. He suggested providing soft loans at an interest rate of no more than 5% and support for raw materials.

The chairman highlighted that the high cost of maize, currently sold at N650-N700 per 200kg, has forced farmers to use “old maize” at N850 per kg, leading to increased production costs and reduced profit margins. He also expressed concerns about the impact of frozen chicken imports on local market prices.

Oyekunle commended the federal government’s decision to allow maize imports, which he believes will eventually reduce production costs and encourage more people to enter the business. He emphasized the need for government support to help poultry farmers overcome these challenges and prevent further decline in the industry.
