Pharmacists Demand Improved Work Environment

Date:

On the occasion of the 2024 World Pharmacists Day in Nigeria, the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria is advocating for better working conditions, improved recognition, and increased empowerment for pharmacists across the nation.

The National Chairman of AHAPN, Elechi Oyim, highlighted the significant role pharmacists play in the country’s healthcare system, underscoring their expertise in providing patient-centered care, managing medications, and delivering health education.

In a statement released to NAIJATRAFFIC to mark the day, Oyim urged the Federal Government to address critical issues affecting pharmacists such as the appointment of consultant pharmacists and the payment of PharmD allowances.

World Pharmacists Day, observed on September 25 annually, aims to acknowledge and celebrate the vital contributions of pharmacists in fostering healthier communities worldwide.

Oyim stressed the importance of enhancing the working conditions of pharmacists to tackle the issue of brain drain in the profession. He also called for pharmacists to be included in health facility boards to oversee professional drug management and advocated for the establishment of mini drug manufacturing units in hospitals to reduce import expenses.

Furthermore, Oyim emphasized the necessity of promoting interdisciplinary education, research collaborations, leveraging innovative technologies, and empowering pharmacists to influence healthcare policies and practices positively.

The president of the association also urged for a centralized system for placing pharmacy graduates in internships, addressing the low patient-to-pharmacist ratio, and increasing the number of pharmacists in public health facilities.

Oyim reiterated the crucial role pharmacists play in addressing global health challenges, particularly in Nigeria where healthcare issues persist, emphasizing their essential contribution to bridging gaps in healthcare needs.

The statement read, “Pharmacists are the backbone of healthcare delivery, working tirelessly to ensure patients receive quality care.

“However, they face numerous challenges, including brain drain, poor working conditions, and limited opportunities for leadership.

“Pharmacists are the guardians of health literacy, working to educate patients and communities about healthy lifestyles and disease prevention.

“Their expertise is crucial in promoting medication adherence, addressing health misinformation, and supporting vulnerable populations.”

AHAPN  Urged for collaboration among healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and policymakers to transform the country’s healthcare landscape.
