Plateau Flood Victims Seek Help After Devastation

Date:

Heavy rainfall in the Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State has resulted in the destruction of numerous homes and the displacement of residents.

The downpour, which commenced on Friday, October 4, 2024, and continued into the early hours of Sunday, October 6, 2024, has led to significant flooding in various communities, with Sabo Gari being especially hard hit, leaving many households homeless.

Mr. Nandul Solomon, a resident of Angwan Bwarat in the Sabon Gida community, spoke to The NAIJATRAFFIC regarding the incident, revealing the chaos and panic it has caused within the community. Many residents found themselves stranded and in urgent need of shelter.

He remarked, “The flood didn’t claim lives, but it was huge. Right now, over 80 households have had their houses destroyed by the flood, rendering many others homeless. The displaced persons are currently searching for where to stay, while others are staying with neighbours, friends, or relatives.”

A community leader from Sabo Gari, Mr. Yintim Nimilam, expressed concern for those affected, urging the state government and philanthropists to provide assistance.

He said, “We appeal to the government and relevant authorities to come to our rescue. The incident is rather unfortunate. As it is, several persons are currently displaced and staying with relatives, and many others don’t know what to do about the situation that has befallen them.” Nimilam serves as the Secretary of the Sabo Gari Development Association.

In response to the flooding, Sunday Abdu, the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that the agency was aware of the situation.

He indicated that officials have been dispatched to the impacted areas to evaluate the damage.

“We have received distress calls regarding the incident of flooding in Langtang South. So, I have detailed my staff to go and assess the situation tomorrow (Monday) to enable us to know the next line of action to take,” Abdu stated.
