Plateau To Set Up Mental Health Department To Tackle Drug Abuse

Date:

The Health Ministry of Plateau State has announced its plan to create a specialized department focused on mental health to address the increasing problem of drug abuse within the region.

During the 2024 International Day against Drug Abuse event held in Jos and organized by the ministry, Health Commissioner Dr. Cletus Shurkuk revealed this initiative.

Annually commemorated on June 26, this year’s theme is centered around the importance of investing in prevention strategies, titled ‘The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention’.

Dr. Shurkuk emphasized that the establishment of a Mental Health Department within the Health Ministry is crucial in the efforts to combat the escalating issue of drug abuse.

This department is poised to take a proactive role in addressing the various factors that make individuals, particularly young people, susceptible to drug abuse.

“According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, in 2023, Plateau had a prevalence of 11 per cent rate of drug abuse.’’

Shurkuk emphasized that preventing drug abuse is the best and most cost-effective approach to spare individuals from the challenges and pain of rehabilitation, ultimately breaking the cycle of drug-related crimes and violence.

He urged other stakeholders to join the fight, creating a safe environment for young people to avoid drug addiction and abuse.

He also warned those involved in drug abuse to stop, citing its harmful consequences.
