President Tinubu will sign the new minimum wage bill into law after it was quickly approved by the National Assembly. Both the Senate and House of Representatives passed the bill without delay during their meetings on Tuesday.
The bill, proposed by President Tinubu, suggests a N70,000 minimum wage with reviews every three years. The bill makes the decided minimum wage among labor unions, businesses, and the government a legal requirement.
One important part of the bill shortens the time between minimum wage reviews from five years to three years, a pledge made by President Tinubu in discussions with labor representatives. The President asked lawmakers to quickly pass the bill.
Majority Leaders Opeyemi Bamidele and Julius Ihonvbere proposed to skip certain procedures to move the bill forward for final approval. The proposals were supported by all with a voice vote.
Senator Bamidele initiated the discussion on the main ideas of the bill, encouraging fellow Senators to back its approval. Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno supported the proposal, especially highlighting the change in review intervals from five to three years. There was no opposition to the bill during the discussion.
All Senators agreed to move the bill forward for final reading and approval through a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. A finalized version of the bill will be forwarded to President Tinubu for his approval.
