The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has approved a proposed amendment to the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Law No. 1 of 2005. The objective of this amendment is to transfer the control and management of schools within the state to the government.
Lawmakers expressed strong support for the Bill during the discussion on the Report of the House Committee on Education, emphasizing the importance of the government regaining authority over schools to ensure better administration.
The lawmakers contended that by bringing schools under government control, they would be able to address the educational requirements of girls in Asari Toru Local Government Area and other areas more effectively.
Speaker Amaewhule praised the efforts of Tekenari Granville, the sponsor of the Bill and representative of Asari-Toru State Constituency II. The Speaker highlighted that the legislation intends to rectify a past error by taking back Kalabari Girls High School in Buguma from the church and reverting its control to the government.
The House went through a detailed review of the Bill’s clauses by transforming into a Committee of the Whole. After careful deliberation, the House reconvened in Plenary and successfully passed the Bill.
