Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo and the Rivers State House of Assembly have announced their intention to challenge the recent ruling of the Court of Appeal.
The court nullified the expulsion of Martin Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers from the Assembly. The Assembly intends to file an appeal against the judgment.
Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, addressing the assembly during a plenary session on Friday, shared that the Rivers State House of Assembly plans to contest the recent verdict of the Court of Appeal.
Oko-Jumbo expressed disagreement with the court’s decision, asserting that the jurisdiction to hear and resolve the case rested with the Rivers State High Court. He also disclosed that the Assembly’s legal representatives have initiated an appeal at the Supreme Court, seeking to challenge the judgment rendered by the Court of Appeal.
He stated, “We strongly believe that the Court of Appeal was in error when it held that the Rivers State High Court lacked the Jurisdiction to hear and determine SUIT NO PHC/1512/CS/2024.
“Accordingly, we have instructed our lawyers and they have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria Challenging the Judgement of the Court of Appeal delivered on the 4th Day of July 2024.”
Lawmakers gathered at the temporary chamber in Port Harcourt’s Government House to discuss two bills: the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill, 2024, and the Rivers State Transport Reform Bill, 2024. These bills have passed their first reading.
