The Senate has granted an extension to the committee investigating the N30 trillion Ways and Means received by the Federal Government from the Central Bank of Nigeria under Godwin Emefiele.
The committee chairman, Senator Isah Jibrin, requested the extension, which was approved. The Senate President initially gave the committee six weeks to complete the probe. The committee has resumed physical meetings after receiving more documents from the Accountant General’s office.
Senator Isah Jibrin confirmed that the National Assembly has received the documents from the Accountant General’s office.
He stated, “Yes, the documents have come from the AGF and distributed to all panel members. At the moment, we are all studying it and once that is concluded we will resume physical meetings hopefully by next week.”
He further noted, “Nigerians can be assured that we will ensure due diligence and see that we do not let them down. Like I earlier said, we had never stopped working on the probe, we just needed more documents and now that we have them, nothing can hold us back.”
After receiving the document, Senator Jibrin requested more time during the Senate plenary to carefully review it and extend the ongoing probe. It was reported on April 26 that Senator Jibrin informed a correspondent about the panel’s plan to seek an extension for the investigation.
He added, “The Senate has been on recess for about a month now, we will seek an extension when we resume. We will ensure that a thorough job is done.”
